Haryana moves Supreme Court after HC stays 75% job reservation for locals

Chandigarh, February 4: The Haryana Government has moved the Supreme Court challenging the Punjab and Haryana High Court's order staying the state law on providing 75 per cent reservation to locals in private sector jobs. The Punjab and Haryana High Court had on Thursday stayed the reservation for locals in private jobs. The Supreme Court will hear the plea on Monday (February 7). A Bench headed by Chief Justice NV Ramana took note of the submissions of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Haryana Government, and agreed to list the appeal of the government on placing the order of the HC on its record. Also read | Illegal mining: ED arrests Punjab CM Channi's nephew Bhupinder Singh Honey In its plea, the Haryana Government argued that the Punjab and Haryana High Court passed its decision after a hearing of just one and a half minute. The High Court on Thursday granted an interim stay on a Haryana government law providing 75 per cent reservation in private sector jobs for residents of the state. The Haryana Government has asked the Supreme Court to set aside the stay. The Haryana State Employment of Local Candidates Act, 2020, was passed in November last year. It had come into effect on January 15 this year. It provides 75 per cent reservation for local youth in private sector jobs that offer a salary of less than 30,000 a month. It covered private companies, societies, trusts and partnership firms in Haryana, as per a notification issued by the state government. As per the notification issued by the Haryana Government on January 10, the Haryana State Employment of Local Candidates Act, 2020 requires local residents to carry the family identity card — the Parivar Pehchan Patra — for being eligible to register for employment on a designated portal of the Haryana Labour Department (https://local.hrylabour.gov.in/).
