Houston’s first Sikh police officer shot from behind at traffic stop
Sandeep Dhaliwal, a Sikh police officer in Houston, USA, was shot dead from behind during a traffic stop in Texas. Sources said Dhaliwal stopped a vehicle with a couple inside. One of them got out of the car and shot him in a “ruthless, cold-blooded way.” The shooter then ran towards a shopping centre nearby. Investigators circulated the shooter’s image, which they procured from Dhaliwal’s dashcam video. “They immediately looked at his dashcam to see what the suspect looked like. They took a photo of the suspect on the scene with their phone and immediately got that out to our intel people,” Harris County sheriff Ed Gonzalez said. Police have arrested the gunman and the woman. Robert Solis, 47, has been charged with capital murder, the Sheriff’s office said on Twitter. Dhaliwal is survived by his wife and three children. He was the first Sikh to join the Sheriff’s office in Texas and he went on to win the hearts of all those who met him. His colleague Adrian Garcia said, “Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal was a trailblazer. He was an example for many. He represented his community with respect and pride.” According to him, Dhaliwal “had a heart of gold” and was someone who put the needs of others before his own.
