India holds Spain to 1-1 draw in the second game
Giving a much improved performance than the opening game, visiting Indian Women’s hockey team held the hosts Spain to a 1-1 draw in the second Test on Sunday. Gurjit Kaur’s (43′) scored her second goal of the tournament while Maria Tost (49′) scored for Spain.
After going down 2-3 to Spain in the opening match on Saturday, the Indian team put up a spirited performance in a high-voltage second encounter. While the first quarter ended in a stalemate, the second quarter saw India make a breakthrough with their first PC of the match. The PC was re-taken but well-saved by the Spanish goalkeeper.
The score continued to be 0-0 at half-time but Spain worked successfully to earn a penalty corner in the third quarter. The Indian goalkeeper, however, executed an excellent save. In the remaining part of the quarter, India raised its tempo that resulted in a penalty corner. This time it was brilliantly struck by drag flicker Gurjit Kaur in the 43rd minute.
The 1-0 lead against the 2018 Women’s World Cup Bronze medal winners did not last too long as a defense lapse by India gave way to Spain scoring a beautiful field goal through Maria Tost in the 49th minute to bring the two teams at level. The final quarter witnessed some intense hockey but the defence of both the teams stood out. The third game will be played on January 29.
