It's time 1984 Sikh genocide cases are tried at the earliest: SC The Supreme Court sought response from Congress leader Sajjan Kumar on a plea filed by the SIT challenging the anticipatory bail granted to him by the Delhi High Court, here on Thursday. A bench of Justice AK Sikri and Ashok Bhushan said it is high time these cases were tried at the earliest. It is a 30-year-old case that took around 200 pages for the high court to grant anticipatory bail, the bench said. Investigation against Kumar had begun in 2016 and now he had come armed with lawyers and dictated his statement to the investigating officer of the case, said Additional Solicitor General Maninder Singh. At the time of granting anticipatory bail to him, the high court had said that everything would be tested in trial of the case but at the end it granted him the relief saying there was no evidence, the ASG added. To this, the bench asked whether all this was considered at the time of anticipatory bail. “Yes. This is totally contrary to the established procedure of law,” ASG said. The bench then issued notice. The Delhi High Court had on February 22 upheld a trial court order granting anticipatory bail to Congress leader Kumar in two anti-Sikh riots cases of 1984, saying that according to records, he was available throughout the investigation. -PTC News
