EU to replace Schengen visa stickers with secure digital barcodes: What Indian travellers need to know

PTC Web Desk: In a major shift in visa policy, the European Union (EU) has decided to replace the traditional Schengen visa sticker with a digitally encrypted barcode, marking a significant move toward complete digitalisation of the visa process. This transformation is expected to simplify and speed up travel formalities for millions, including Indian passport holders heading to Europe.

The decision follows the EU foreign ministers' endorsement in November 2024 to transition Schengen visa applications to a unified online platform. The digital visa, officially known as a "secure 2D barcode," aims to strengthen border security while offering a seamless and modern travel experience.

Key changes in the Schengen visa system

This digital overhaul was formally adopted in June 2023 and represents one of the most significant updates to the visa system in decades. The digital visa system will allow applicants to submit documents, pay fees, track applications, and receive their visa—all online.

Upon arrival in the Schengen zone, travellers will simply scan their digital barcode, granting immigration officers direct access to visa validity and biometric data through a central EU system. This system was piloted during the 2024 Paris Olympics, where over 70,000 participants received digital Schengen visas instead of physical stickers.

Upcoming digital border control measures

In addition to the digital visa, the EU is introducing two key systems to further modernise border controls:

Entry/Exit System (EES): Scheduled for launch in October 2025, this system will replace manual passport stamping with automated biometric checks, including fingerprint and facial recognition technology.

European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS): Expected by 2026, ETIAS will mandate pre-travel online authorisation for visa-exempt travellers, such as citizens from the US or UAE.

The digital Schengen visa is set to become standard across all EU member nations by 2028.

What this means for Indian tourists & business travellers

For Indian travellers, this digital transition offers several advantages:

Less paperwork and the ability to track visa status online.

First-time applicants must provide biometrics in person, but repeat travellers can expect quicker processing in future applications.

The digital visa can be used at biometric e-gates, expediting arrival procedures.

These changes align with the EU's broader digital transformation goals and are designed to improve both security and efficiency in cross-border travel.
