According to Hindu mythology, Nirjala Ekadashi is associated with the Pandavas, the heroic brothers from the Indian epic Mahabharata. Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers, was unable to observe regular Ekadashi fasts due to his voracious appetite. To fulfill his desire to observe Ekadashi and seek blessings, sage Vyasa advised him to observe a single fast without water, which would be as powerful as observing all 24 Ekadashis in a year. Bhima followed the sage's advice and observed the Nirjala Ekadashi fast, which pleased Lord Vishnu.
