Unnao tragedy: 18 die as Delhi-bound bus rams into milk tanker on Agra-Lucknow Expressway

Accident news: At least 18 people died after a double-decker bus going from Bihar to Delhi met an accident on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway in Unnao on Wednesday.

The bus rammed into a milk tanker at around 05:15 AM on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway under the Behtamujawar PS area. Police rushed to spot on receiving the information of the incident and took all the injured to CHC Bangarmau for treatment.


Necessary action is being taken by taking the bodies in custody, Behtamujawar Police officials said.

Ex-gratia announced

After the accident in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Wednesday an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the family of each deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured.

"The Prime Minister has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased in the mishap in Unnao. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000", PMO said.

CM Yogi Adityanath expresses grief 

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed his grief over the accident and directed officials to ensure the injured are given proper medical care.

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath took cognizance of the road accident in the Unnao district and expressed consolations to the bereaved families of the deceased. CM directed the officials to reach the spot immediately and expedite the relief work, CMO said in a statement.

Unnno DM Gaurang Rathi stated, "Today, around 05.15 AM, a private bus from Motihari, Bihar collided with a milk tanker. The accident claimed the lives of 18 persons and left 19 injured. Following the initial investigation, it appears that the bus was travelling at high speeds."

Speaking about the tragedy, Uttar Pradesh Dy CM Brajesh Pathak said, "18 people have died, while 19 have been injured and taken to Unnao district hospital. Injured are being transferred to higher-level hospitals. All hospitals near Unnao have been put on alert. The trauma centre at KGMO is on alert, and I have arrived to inspect all of the arrangements. The majority of the injured persons are from Bihar, and we are in contact with the Bihar government. The reasons for the accident will be determined following an inquiry; our top concern is to offer proper treatment to those injured."

President Murmu extends condolences

President Droupadi Murmu also expressed grief over the incident, terming it 'extremely sad'.

"The news of the death of many people in a road accident on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh is extremely sad", Rashtrapati Bhavan posted on 'X'.

The President also offered her condolences to the families of those killed in the unfortunate accident.

"I express my deepest condolences to the family members of those who have become victims of such sudden death and wish for the speedy recovery of those injured" , a statement read.
