Avalanche alert! J&K issues warning of avalanches in these areas within next 24 hrs, check details
Avalanche alert! The Jammu and Kashmir State Disaster Management Authority issued a warning of potential avalanches with a 'medium' danger level forecasted to occur above 2500 meters in the Kupwara and Ganderbal districts within the next 24 hours.
Urging precautionary measures, authorities advised residents in these areas to avoid venturing into avalanche-prone zones.
The Disaster Management Authority provided a helpline number, emphasizing the importance of immediate action in case of emergencies by dialing -112.
The avalanche alert coincides with an orange alert issued for heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh areas from April 13 to 15. According to the forecast, isolated heavy rainfall is expected during this period.
The India Meteorological Department predicted thunderstorms and lightning over the next five days in Jammu & Kashmir, with heavy rain and snow expected at isolated places on April 13th and 14th.
Possibility of thunderstorms, gusty winds, and hailstorms at isolated places during the same period could lead to surface traffic disruptions, as warned by officials.
This warning follows a recent incident on March 29 when an avalanche hit the Sonamarg tourist resort in Ganderbal district. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported, and all occupants of the buried vehicles were successfully rescued.
In light of previous incidents, including an avalanche warning issued on March 4th, authorities underscore the importance of caution and avoidance of avalanche-prone areas, especially in districts like Kishtwar, Kupwara, Bandipore, Baramulla, and Ganderbal.
