Central govt employees entitled to 30 days of leave annually for personal reasons, says Jitendra Singh
PTC Web Desk: Central government employees are eligible to take up to 30 days of leave each year for personal reasons, including the care of elderly parents, Union Minister of State for Personnel, Jitendra Singh, confirmed in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. He was responding to a question during the ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament regarding leave provisions for employees who need to look after aged parents.
The minister clarified that such leave is already available under the Central Civil Services (Leave) Rules, 1972, which entitles employees to 30 days of earned leave, 20 days of half-pay leave, eight days of casual leave, and two restricted holidays annually. These leaves can be used for personal reasons, including the care of elderly parents, Singh added in his written reply.
The Central Civil Services (Leave) Rules, 1972, which have been in force since June 1, 1972, govern the leave entitlements for most Central government employees. However, the rules do not apply to certain categories such as Railway employees, casual workers, part-time workers, and members of the All India Services, who are covered under separate regulations.
Under these rules, employees are entitled to various types of leave, including earned leave, half-pay leave, maternity/paternity leave, study leave, and special disability leave, among others. Earned leave is credited twice a year, on January 1 and July 1, and can be availed as needed.
In addition to these statutory leaves, employees are also entitled to holidays such as casual leave, restricted holidays, compensatory offs, and special casual leave, as per government directives issued periodically.
