Chandigarh MC bans lawn watering, car washing amid summer water demand; violators to face action

Chandigarh, April 13: In the wake of the increased demand for drinking water during the summer season, the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh has implemented a series of water conservation measures effective from April 15 to June 30. These measures aim to curb the wasteful use of water and ensure the responsible use of this precious resource in the city.

Under the new regulations, residents are prohibited from watering lawns, washing courtyards, and washing vehicles during the morning water supply hours. Violations of these restrictions will result in penalties and potential disconnection of water service, as outlined in the city's Water Supply Bye-Laws.

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has identified specific actions that constitute the misuse of water and will invite penalties. These include: Washing vehicles and courtyards;  watering lawns; any other reasons leading to water wastage or misuse; overflow from overhead or underground water tanks;  leakage from water meter chambers; leakage and overflow from desert coolers; wastage of water due to the non-installation of bib taps and installation and use of booster pumps directly on water supply lines.

If consumers are found to be violating any of these rules, they will face a penalty of Rs  5,512. The fine will be added to their regular water bill. Additionally, any equipment such as booster pumps or hosepipes used in these violations will be confiscated. In the case of repeated offenses, water connections will be disconnected immediately without further notice.

For certain violations, such as misuse due to defects like leaks or overflow from desert coolers, residents will receive a notice and have two days to rectify the situation and failure to do so will result in the imposition of a fine.

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has sought public cooperation to manage the water supply demand effectively during the summer months.

The Commissioner of Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, in a statement, urged the public to follow the guidelines diligently and contribute to the sustainable management of water resources. The corporation has called for residents' support in conserving water.
