On May 7, after the Pahalgam attack, India launched Operation Sindoor shortly after midnight, destroying nine terrorist camps inside Pakistan. Following this, CISF personnel at the Uri power plant were placed on high alert and told to turn off all lights. A few hours later, Pakistan responded with heavy and random shelling across the LoC and also sent multiple drones. Their main target was the Uri hydro power plant on the Jhelum River in Baramulla district, right next to the Line of Control. The attack also put nearby civilian areas at serious risk.
As shells landed near residential areas, CISF jawans went door-to-door and evacuated 250 civilians along with staff members of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC). Everyone was safely moved to bunkers, and no lives were lost.
