Cyclone Biparjoy: Amit Shah visits cyclone-affected areas of Gujarat, interacts with people
Kutch (Gujarat), June 17: Union Home Minister Amit Shah's scheduled press conference at 5 pm in Gujarat's Bhuj on Saturday has been postponed to 7 pm. The Union Home Minister travelled to his home state earlier on Saturday to assess the trail of devastation left in the wake of Cyclone "Biparjoy."
Shah interacted with personnel of the National Disaster Response Force in the Kachchh district in addition to meeting the residents of Kathda village in Mandvi.
Shah visited the Mandvi Civil Hospital earlier on Saturday and spoke with patients who had been impacted by the extremely severe cyclonic storm.
Shah and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel carried out an aerial survey of the cyclone's worst-hit areas.
Cyclone Biparjoy made landfall on Thursday night about 10 km north of the Jakhau Port in Kutch, Gujarat.
After Cyclone Biparjoy made landfall in coastal parts of the state on Thursday evening, 127 citizens were evacuated from Rupen Bandar Government Primary School and relocated to NDH School Dwarka by a total of six National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams.
According to NDRF, the evacuated people included 82 men, 27 women and 15 children.
After cyclone "Biparjoy" made landfall in Gujarat, heavy rain was predicted for the state's following two days. As a precaution in cyclone-prone areas, Western Railways decided to partially or completely suspend the operation of a few more trains on Friday.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported the cyclone's weakening into a "deep depression" and predicted that it will continue to weaken into a "depression" over the course of the next 12 hours.
