Delhi Earthquake: Govt warns of possible aftershocks, residents urged to stay alert
PTC Web Desk: Hours after a magnitude 4.0 earthquake jolted Delhi and surrounding areas early Monday morning, the Central Government issued a warning about potential aftershocks. The tremors, which struck at 5.36 am at a depth of 5 km, caused panic as residents rushed out of their homes.
Union Earth Sciences Minister Dr Jitendra Singh advised residents to remain calm and take safety precautions. He stated that experts from the Ministry of Earth Sciences are closely monitoring the situation. "The authorities are vigilant, and regular updates are being provided through various communication channels and social media," he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake's epicenter was located 9 km east of New Delhi, which is why the tremors felt unusually strong despite the low magnitude. The coordinates were recorded at 28.59°N latitude and 77.16°E longitude.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also urged people to stay calm and follow safety measures. In his message on X, he wrote, “Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation.”
