Devendra Fadnavis to take oath as Maharashtra CM; over 40,000 expected to attend
PTC News Desk: BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis is set to take oath as the Maharashtra Chief Minister for the third time today. The ceremony will take place in Mumbai with Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde and NCP's Ajit Pawar as Deputy Chief Ministers in the newly formed cabinet.
The swearing-in ceremony, which is set for 5:30 p.m., will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a number of senior leaders, including Chief Ministers from several NDA states.
This marks Fadnavis' return to the helm following his unanimous election as Leader of the Maharashtra BJP Legislative Party on Wednesday. He was appointed after the BJP's strong performance in the 2024 Assembly elections, in which the MahaYuti alliance won 235 of 288 seats.
Vijay Rupani, the BJP's central observer, declared Fadnavis' unanimous election as legislature party leader on Wednesday. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman attended the legislative meeting and referred to the Mahayuti alliance as a "double engine government" ready to accelerate Maharashtra's development.
The BJP emerged as the single largest party, with 132 seats. The Shiv Sena and NCP strengthened their alliance by capturing 57 and 41 seats, respectively.
Meanwhile, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance suffered a crushing loss, with Congress getting only 16 seats, Shiv Sena (UBT) managing 20, and Sharad Pawar's NCP faction securing only 10.
