Diwali gift for senior citizens: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a new health insurance scheme called the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) for senior citizens above the age of 70. The scheme, which was announced last month, provides full healthcare coverage to seniors regardless of income.

The launch addresses a long-standing healthcare deficit for India's senior citizens.

The Ayushman card allows holders to free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh at AB PMJAY-empaneled facilities.

Benefits for beneficiaries

Senior citizens covered under AB PM-JAY will receive an additional Rs 5 lakh annually for healthcare expenses.

This additional coverage is only available to seniors and is not included in the benefits provided to younger family members.

Seniors who are covered by previous public health insurance schemes, including as the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), or Ayushman CAPF, can choose to continue with their current plan or switch to the new AB PM-JAY.

The initiative aims to provide yearly insurance coverage of Rs 5 lakh to approximately 4.5 crore families, including over 6 crore seniors.

How to apply?

To gain access to health coverage, individuals must first register on the PMJAY portal or the Ayushman app. Those who already have an Ayushman card will need to apply again via the portal or app and complete their eKYC for a new one.
