Faridabad chemical factory blast: 5 cops among 35 injured, several vehicles gutted; area evacuated
Faridabad chemical factory blast: At least 35 persons, including five police personnel, were injured after a massive fire broke out at a chemical factory in Sector-24 of Faridabad, Haryana, Monday evening. The incident triggered panic in the surrounding area as multiple chemical drums exploded, causing the blaze to spread rapidly beyond the factory premises.
According to police officials, the incident occurred at Kalka Chemical Factory, where metal sheet cutting work is carried out using CNC machines. Employees were working at the time when a chemical drum suddenly exploded inside the premises. This initial blast was followed by a series of explosions from other drums stored at the site, intensifying the fire.
The flames quickly engulfed the entire factory complex and spread to the adjoining road, setting several parked vehicles ablaze. Thick smoke and continuous explosions led to chaos, with employees running for safety.
Several workers sustained severe burn injuries after coming in contact with flames and hazardous chemicals. Five police personnel, who had reached the spot to manage the situation and assist in rescue operations, were also reportedly injured in the fire. Besides, two police personnel and three fire department officials sustained burn injuries during the rescue efforts.
The injured were immediately rushed to the Civil Hospital in Faridabad, while some were admitted to private hospitals. So far, 35 persons with burn injuries have been reported. Of these, 12 are undergoing treatment in government and private medical facilities.
Faridabad Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Jayant Ahuja confirmed that hospital authorities had mobilised all available medical staff.
Firefighting operations began soon after the incident was reported. Initially, two fire tenders were dispatched to the spot. However, given the intensity of the blaze and the continuous explosions of chemical-filled drums, an additional 10 fire engines were pressed into service. Rescue teams worked on a war footing to control the situation.
Authorities also evacuated the surrounding area as a precautionary measure due to the risk posed by exploding drums stored both inside and outside the factory. The fire department eventually brought the blaze under control after sustained efforts.
The cause of the initial explosion is yet to be officially determined, and further investigation is underway.
