Ghaziabad sister's death: Father's link to live-in partner's suicide in 2015 surfaces

PTC News Desk: Days after three minor sisters died by suicide in Ghaziabad, police said on Saturday that their father, Chetan Kumar, had earlier been connected to another suicide case in 2015 involving his live-in partner. Police said this information is being considered as part of the ongoing investigation.

DCP (Trans Hindon) Nimish Patil said Kumar’s live-in partner had died in 2015 after falling from the roof of a flat in Rajendra Nagar Colony under Sahibabad police station. He clarified that the earlier case was closed as suicide and there is no proof linking it to the recent deaths of the three girls. Sources said Sujata is the mother of Nishika, while Heena is the mother of Prachi and Pakhi.

Police are looking into whether the family situation and home environment affected the mental health of the children. Officials said a suicide note found in the girls’ room suggested they were emotionally closer to their father and did not mention their mothers. A nine-page diary recovered from the room is also being checked as part of the probe.

Police said the sisters were upset after their father took away their mobile phones. He had done this because he was worried about their heavy use of Korean apps, online games and contact with foreign friends, and later sold the phones. On the night of the incident, the girls tried to use their mother’s phone but could not access the Korean apps. Forensic checks confirmed that the app was not installed on that phone.

Uttar Pradesh State Commission for Women Chairperson Dr Babita Singh, who visited the family on Saturday, said preliminary findings pointed to excessive academic pressure and parental negligence.

“The mental state of the children was not understood at the right time,” she said.

She added that the commission has sought a detailed report from the district administration and police.
