Monsoon to hit Himachal Pradesh early; heavy rain and storms expected across region

PTC Web Desk: Himachal Pradesh is likely to witness an early onset of the southwest monsoon, with weather conditions aligning for its arrival within the next two to three days. According to officials in the Met department, favourable atmospheric patterns are enabling the monsoon’s progression into the region ahead of schedule.

Typically, the monsoon reaches Himachal by June 25. However, this year it could arrive nearly a week earlier, contrasting with 2024 when the rains began on June 27. Even ahead of the official monsoon entry, several areas in the state are already experiencing significant pre-monsoon showers.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for heavy rainfall between June 21 and 23, particularly in Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Shimla, and Sirmaur districts. Light rain is expected to continue across many regions today and tomorrow as well.

Western disturbance to intensify from June 20

Beginning June 20, a strong western disturbance is forecast to become more active. This weather system is expected to trigger widespread rainfall over the next four days, especially in the plains and mid-hill areas of Himachal. Alongside the rain, strong winds and thunderstorms are also likely during this period. Over the past 24 hours, most parts of the state have reported light to moderate rainfall, with intense downpours recorded in districts like Bilaspur, Shimla, Hamirpur, Kullu, Kangra, and Sirmaur. As a result, water levels in several rivers and streams have begun to rise, raising concerns over potential flash flooding in vulnerable areas.
