Indian Railways announces revised ticket cancellation policies; know refund eligibility

PTC News Desk: The Indian Railways is mulling to roll our fresh norms in order to streamline operations, ticketing transparency and freight movement, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Tuesday.

The Railway Minister outlined five key reforms that will be introduced as as part of a broader plan to modernise the railway network and enhance passenger services.

Amongst the reforms is one major change linked with cancellations of tickets. Confirmed tickets cancelled before less than eights hours will not be subjected to a refund and will fall under no-refund window. The move is aimed at reducing last-minute cancellations and improve seat availability for other passengers.

Indian Railways' revised cancellation policies:

  • Cancellations made more than 72 hours before departure eligible for maximum refund
  • 25% deduction to be applied if cancellations occur between 72 and 24 hours
  • 50% fare deduction on cancellations between 24 and 8 hours before departure
  • No refund for cancellations made less than 8 hours before departure

Ashwini Vaishnaw also announced that passengers will now be able to upgrade their travel class and alter boarding point up to 30 minutes prior to departure.
