Farmer brothers in Punjab, burdened with Rs 50 lakh debt, end life holding hands
PTC News Desk: In a heart-wrenching incident, two farmer brothers died by suicide after jumping in front of train at Bahmanwala village near Kotkapura town in Punjab’s Faridkot district on Monday.
According to the eyewitnesses, the brother duo were holding hands moments before they took the tragic step resulting in their instant death.
On the day of the incident, they reportedly reached the railway track on a two-wheeler and waited for the train before allegedly jumping to death.
The brothers are survived by their wives (both sisters) and a young daughter each.
Soon after receiving the information, the Government Railway Police (GRP) teams rushed to the spot and took the bodies into their custody. The bodies were later sent for post-mortem examination at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital in Faridkot.
According to the villagers, the deceased brothers were under severe mental distress over mounting debt, which had doubled from Rs 25 lakh to Rs 50 lakh. Despite persistent efforts, they were unable to recover costs and pushed to committ suicide by financial hardship.
Meanwhile, the Kirti Kisan Union has demanded a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each and a loan waiver for the family. The union has also called upon farmer-friendly agricultural policies.
