Joshimath sinking: CM Pushkar Singh Dhami to lead rescue and rehabilitation operations

Dehradun, January 6: Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday said that amid the land subsidence at Joshimath in Chamoli district, he would call a high-level meeting in Dehradun this evening.

"I will hold a high-level meeting with top officials in Dehradun this evening regarding landslides in Joshimath and cracks in houses," Uttarakhand CM said while talking to ANI. Apart from the officials of the Disaster Management, Irrigation, Home Department, Commissioner Garhwal Mandal and District Magistrate Chamoli will also participate in the meeting.


Dhami further said that he would visit Joshimath on Saturday and take stock of the situation.

"A team from BJP has also been sent there," he added.

In particular, the BJP's state under the coordination of party general secretary Aditya Kothari, formed a 14-member committee to assess the flooding incidents and reported damages.

Severe landslide occurred at Joshimath in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. All districts in the region are currently affected by landslides. The cracks reportedly occurred in his 561 homes in Joshimath  as a result of ongoing land subsidence in the city, reports the district's disaster management agency. A total of 66 families are said to have migrated from his Joshimath after

homes were cracked. The residents of the holy city of Joshimath in Uttarakhand were warned, evacuated by the administration and moved to local night shelters after they noticed cracks in their houses and streets in the city. Victims and their families and children are now living in emergency shelters, officials said.

According to local residents, the government assured that they will be provided with prefabricated housing, but they worry about when the actual house will be allotted.

The government of Uttarakhand assembled a team of scientists to find out why the land subsidence occurred in Joshimath and why the houses were damaged. The

team will visit the site to investigate the reasons for the subsidence, the government said in an official statement.

Engineers from the Geological Survey of India, Wadia Institute and  IIT Roorkee are included in the team formed under the leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, according to an official statement. 

"Now the process of increasing cracks in Singhdhar and Marwadi has started. Badrinath NH near Singhdhar Jain locality and JP Company Gate in Marwadi, near the forest department check post, is continuously cracking. This crack is increasing every hour which is worrying," said Joshimath Municipal Chairman Shailendra Pawar.
