Kanpur horror: Father kills 11-year-old twin daughters, confesses to crime

PTC Web Desk: A shocking case has emerged from Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur, where a father has been arrested for allegedly killing his 11-year-old twin daughters inside their home. The incident took place at Trimoorti Apartment in the Naubasta area of Kidwai Nagar on Sunday.

The police said a call was received around 4.30 am alerting authorities about the murder. When a police response team reached the flat, both girls were found dead in a pool of blood while the accused father was present at the scene.

The accused, 48-year-old Shashi Ranjan Mishra, had previously worked as a medical representative but had been unemployed for the past few years. Officials said the motive behind the crime is still under investigation, though early findings suggest possible mental health concerns.

Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal stated that the accused appeared mentally disturbed and further investigation is being carried out to understand the circumstances leading to the crime. During a search of the house, officers recovered a large quantity of medicines, indicating possible treatment or substance use, though no financial distress has been reported in the family.

During questioning, Mishra reportedly expressed anxiety about his daughters’ future. However, the police have not confirmed a clear motive so far.

The family consisted of five members, Mishra, his wife Reshma, their twin daughters, and a six-year-old son. At the time of the incident, the mother and younger child were in a separate room.

Reshma told investigators that the evening before the incident had been normal, with the family having dinner together. Later, Mishra took the daughters into his room. CCTV footage from inside the house reportedly shows that around 2.30 am, he took one of the girls to the washroom and returned shortly after, following which the lights were turned off.

The police said Mishra has confessed to the crime. As per preliminary findings, he allegedly mixed sleeping pills into the children’s food,  leaving them unconscious before attacking them while they were asleep. Investigators said the girls were first strangled and later their throats were slit using a cleaver that had been purchased a day earlier.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Deependra Nath Chaudhary confirmed that initial evidence suggests the attack took place while the children were asleep. The weapon has been recovered and forensic teams have examined the scene. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

In her statement, Reshma said her husband had been mentally unstable following his mother’s death and had earlier expressed thoughts of ending his life along with the children. She also alleged that he had become increasingly suspicious, consumed alcohol and medication and had installed CCTV cameras throughout the house, restricting access to certain areas.

She maintained that she was unaware of the incident until the police arrived, as she had been asleep at the time. Based on her statement, an FIR has been registered at Naubasta police station.

Reshma has demanded strict punishment for her husband, stating that he should not be spared.

The police said the investigation is ongoing, with a focus on reconstructing the sequence of events and examining the mental condition of the accused. Authorities are also analysing CCTV footage and other evidence to establish a clear timeline.
