Manipur ethnic violence: In the wake of ethnic violence that shook Manipur, a heart-wrenching incident has come to light from Serou village in Kakching district. The 80-year-old wife of a revered freedom fighter, S Churachand Singh, was brutally targeted by an armed group during the clashes between the valley-majority Meiteis and the hill-majority Kuki tribe over the Meiteis' demand for Scheduled Tribes (ST) status. The incident occurred on May 28, amid the escalating violence and exchange of gunfire that transformed Serou from a picturesque village to a scene of devastation.
The freedom fighter's wife, identified as Ibetombi, was trapped inside her house, which was allegedly locked from outside by the attackers before they set it ablaze. Ibetombi's grandson, Premkanta, a witness to the horrific incident, recounted the tragic events. He had managed to escape by a narrow margin, sustaining injuries from grazing bullets while trying to save his grandmother. Ibetombi, unable to flee quickly due to her advanced age and limited mobility, urged her family to run and return for her later. However, the blaze had engulfed the house entirely before they could reach her.
Premkanta, displaying the scars on his body as a testament to the danger they faced, shared the last words of his grandmother, pleading for her family to come back for her. The recovery process from the debris was distressing, and among the possessions found was a cherished photograph of Ibetombi's late husband, the freedom fighter, with former President APJ Abdul Kalam.
Serou, once a bustling village, now lies in ruins, with burnt houses and bullet-riddled walls as grim reminders of the violence that erupted. The Serou market, which was once full of life, now resembles a ghost town, with all the residents fleeing for safety. The memories of that fateful night still haunt the surviving residents, and returning home is a daunting challenge for those who have lost loved ones.
For now, security forces remain on high alert, attempting to prevent further confrontations between the communities. Movement is restricted, and outsiders are warned to stay away from the area after 6 in the evening. The absence of internet connectivity for over two months has further added to the isolation and uncertainty faced by the people of Manipur.
As the scars of this tragic incident continue to heal slowly, the emotional and psychological toll on the survivors remains profound. The memory of Ibetombi's courageous last stand, along with the devastation of Serou, serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for peace, reconciliation, and understanding among the diverse communities of Manipur.
