Malegaon 2008 blast case: Pragya Thakur pulled up by court for skipping hearing

Malegaon 2008 blast case: A special court in Mumbai pulled up BJP MP Pragya Thakur once again on Wednesday in connection with the 2008 Malegaon blast case. The development comes less than a month after the court issued a bailable warrant against her for her constant absences from hearings.

Thakur, the primary accused in the case, missed the hearing on Wednesday as well, and the special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court noted that her prolonged absence is jeopardising the trial. The Bhopal MP has regularly cited health reasons for not attending the hearings, and the court has now ordered the NIA to give a status report on her health by Monday, April 8.

The BJP politician, who was granted bail in the case on health grounds, has frequently been seen enjoying cricket, basketball, and dancing. She had also skipped court after being admitted to the hospital but had instead attended a public event the same day.

On September 29, 2008, an explosive device mounted to a motorbike exploded near a mosque in Malegaon, Maharashtra, killing ten people and wounding over 100. Thakur is the primary accused in the case, and she and six others are being tried under the strict Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and provisions of the Indian Penal Code.
