Massive fire breaks out at Haldia oil refinery in West Bengal, train services suspended

PTC News Desk: At least 20 people were injured after a major fire broke out on a naphtha pipeline near an oil refinery in West Bengal's Haldia district early on Tuesday morning.


The fire started in the Chiranjibpur area under Haldia Municipality, causing panic among local residents. According to police, six of the injured are in critical condition and are being moved to a hospital in Kolkata for specialised treatment. The flames also spread to nearby homes, destroying several houses.

Firefighters quickly reached the scene and began efforts to control the blaze. Nine fire engines were deployed as part of the large-scale firefighting operation.

People who suffered burn injuries were rescued and taken to Haldia Sub-Divisional Hospital, while those with serious injuries were later shifted to Tamluk Medical College and Hospital for advanced treatment.

The incident also affected transportation, leading to the suspension of train services on the Haldia–Panskura railway route while emergency teams carried out rescue and safety operations.

According to the company, initial findings indicate that the fire may have started near an illegal naphtha theft point located close to the plant.
