Monsoon mayhem in Himachal: Landslides in Shimla, Kinnaur; stretches of NH-5 blocked

Himachal Rains: Due to torrential and relentless rainfall and thunderstorm across Himachal, stretches of  National Highway-5, at Broni Nallah and Khaneri in the Shimla district and Kaksthal in the Kinnaur district, were blocked owing to landslides after heavy downpours in state. 

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) shared images of the blocked stretches of the highway in two Himachal districts.


Scores of commuters, including tourists as well as locals are stranded for hours in Shimla and Kinnaur due to several landslides.

Earlier, National Highways blocked at two locations in Shimla. National Highways in the Jeori and Broni Nallah area near Jhakri in the region have been blocked due to heavy downpours. 

Cloudburst in Himachal’s Kullu 

Meanwhile, earlier this week cloudburst also strikes Kullu district. Due to the cloudburst several houses were damaged and two bridges also washed away.   

As per the data, a total of five houses were completely damaged and 15 houses have been partially damaged due to the occurrence of cloudbursts.

Apart from this, the Bhuntar-Gadsa Maniyar road has also been damaged. Two bridges were also washed away due to the cloudburst. 

IMD issues orange alert in these districts 

Shimla, 

Kullu, 

Kangra,

Chamba, 

Sirmaur, 

Solan, 

Mandi. 

These districts will be receiving heavy rainfall. The rain will continue but there will not be much rain during the next 48 hours. 

   

Advisory for Himachalis and tourists 

1. Avoid visiting hilly areas and places prone to landslides and heavy rainfall. 

2. Avoid trekking amid inclement weather. 

3. In case of lightning strikes, it is safe to stay indoors. 

4. Do not visit river areas. 

5. Pay attention to the warnings issued by the weather department. 

6. Possibility of landslides, flash floods and fog especially in the districts of Shimla and Mandi.
