Noida techie dies while screaming for help as car plunges into drain amid dense fog

PTC News Desk: A 27-year-old software engineer died after drowning when his speeding car skidded into a water-logged basement near Sector 150 in Greater Noida late Friday night. This happened despite his repeated cries for help and a lengthy rescue attempt in front of his father and police officials.

The accident took place in Sector 150, where the car lost control in dense fog, smashed through the wall of a deep drain and plunged into a basement filled with water. Teams from the Knowledge Park police station, the fire department, SDRF and NDRF carried out rescue efforts for nearly four and a half hours before locating the man in about 30 feet of water. He was rushed to the hospital, but doctors declared him dead.

The victim was identified as Yuvraj Mehta, a resident of Tata Eureka Park Society in Sector 150. He worked with Dunnhumby India in Gurugram’s Sector 54 as a software engineer and mainly worked from home, visiting the office only occasionally.

According to police, Yuvraj was returning home from his Gurugram office in his Grand Vitara on Friday night. Just 500 metres short of his residence, poor visibility caused by fog led him to crash through the drain wall, sending the vehicle into the flooded basement. The car overturned and floated due to the high water level. Yuvraj managed to escape from the vehicle and called his father, Rajkumar Mehta, to inform him of the accident. His father rushed to the spot after alerting Dial-112.

Police and fire teams arrived soon after with both small and large cranes in an attempt to rescue him, but they were unable to reach him in time.
