Opposition MPs to bring no confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla

PTC News Desk: The opposition MPs on Monday announced that they will give a notice to bring a motion of no confidence against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

“The Speaker also made derogatory comments about women members of the opposition and suspended their eight members. This is high-handedness and we are united against this. We will move a motion of no confidence,” Premchandran said.

Congress MP KC Venugopal alleged that House is being run like a preserve of the government, which is not acceptable.

The Lok Sabha has been repeatedly disrupted over the past few days after Rahul Gandhi was barred from referring to passages from an unpublished book while speaking about the 2020 India–China LAC standoff in Galwan.

The Speaker ruled that Gandhi could not cite material from a book that has not yet been published.

Earlier, the opposition had moved a similar no-confidence motion against former Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar in December 2024. That motion was dismissed by the Deputy Chairman, who said the mandatory 14-day notice had not been served and that Dhankhar’s name had not been spelled correctly in the motion.

The no-confidence motion against the current Speaker is expected to be largely symbolic, as the opposition lacks the numbers in the Lok Sabha to push it through. However, opposition leaders said the move reflects their dissatisfaction with the Speaker and their objection to the way he is conducting proceedings in the House.
