Atal Bihari Vajpayee remembered: PM Modi's tribute on death anniversary

New Delhi, August 16: Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered heartfelt tributes to the late former Prime Minister and stalwart of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Atal Bihari Vajpayee, on the anniversary of his passing. Modi emphasized Vajpayee's instrumental role in propelling the nation's advancement into the 21st century across a diverse spectrum of sectors.

Utilizing the platform of X, formerly recognized as Twitter, PM Modi conveyed his sentiments, stating that the entirety of India's 1.4 billion citizens joins him in paying homage to the exceptional Atal Ji on his Punya Tithi (memorial day). Modi underscored how India's progress was deeply enriched by Vajpayee's sagacious leadership. He accentuated Vajpayee's pivotal contribution to propelling the nation towards unprecedented growth and ushering it into the modern era across a wide array of domains.

Born in Gwalior in 1924, Vajpayee stood as the prominent face of the BJP for several decades, carving his name as the first non-Congress Prime Minister to complete a full term in office.

Vajpayee's tenure as India's Prime Minister unfolded in two phases: initially, from May 16, 1996, to June 1, 1996, followed by an extensive term from March 19, 1998, to May 22, 2004. Notably, he also served as India's External Affairs Minister during Prime Minister Moraji Desai's cabinet from 1977 to 1979. His demise transpired at the AIIMS Hospital in Delhi on August 16, 2018.

In the aftermath of ascending to power in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recognizing the exemplary legacy of the former Prime Minister and recipient of the Bharat Ratna award, designated December 25 as Good Governance Day—an annual celebration to honor Vajpayee's birthday and his dedication to the nation.
