New Delhi, August 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid solemn tribute on Monday to the lives lost during the tumultuous partition of India and Pakistan in 1947.

As the nation observes the 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day,' Prime Minister Modi took to Twitter to reflect on this poignant occasion. He remarked, "Partition Horrors Remembrance Day is an occasion to reverently remember those Indians whose lives were sacrificed in the partition of the country. Along with this, this day also reminds us of the suffering and struggle of those who were forced to bear the brunt of displacement. I salute all such people."

It was in 2021 when PM Modi announced the designation of August 14 as the 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.' The intent behind this commemoration is to ensure that the nation never forgets the sufferings and sacrifices of Indians during the fateful partition in 1947.

August 15, 1947, marks India's liberation from British rule, a day celebrated as Independence Day with exuberance and pride. However, intertwined with the jubilation of freedom, the trauma of partition remains an indelible part of the nation's history.

The emergence of the independent Indian nation was marred by the agonizing experience of partition, which etched enduring scars on the lives of millions. This partition triggered one of the largest migrations in human history, impacting approximately 20 million individuals. Countless families were compelled to abandon their ancestral homes, towns, and cities, embarking on a journey as refugees to begin anew.

As India reflects on its journey to independence, 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made, the lives lost, and the resilience displayed during one of the most significant and challenging episodes in the nation's history.
