Punjab Govt to give Rs 30 crore per month grant to Punjabi University

Patiala, March 14: The Punjab Government has finally come out to the rescue of cash-strapped Punjabi University, Patiala. It has decided to give Rs 30 crore per month (Rs 360 crore annually) as government grant to the institution.

This was decided during Punjabi University Vice-Chancellor Prof Arvind’s meeting with Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema. The meeting was also attended by Principal Secretary to Chief Minister, Principal Secretary (Finance) and Principal Secretary (Higher Education).

The university authorities had been protesting over cutting university budget in the Punjab Budget 2023  announced on Match 10. 

Punjabi University Vice Chancellor Prof Arvind has thanked Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and officials concerned for coming to the rescue of the cash-strapped universiy.

He also thanked the government on behalf of teachers, employees and lakhs of students associated with Punjabi University.

Meanwhile, the bill for the amount due for the first quarter has been sent to the Punjab Government by the university.
