Rajasthan Shocker: Jodhpur lecturer sets herself, 3-year-old daughter afire due to dowry harassment
PTC Web Desk: In a tragic incident in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur district, a woman lecturer allegedly ended her life by setting herself and her three-year-old daughter on fire following continuous harassment by her husband and in-laws.
The deceased, identified as Sanju Bishnoi, returned home from school on Friday afternoon and allegedly poured petrol on herself and her daughter, Yashasvi, before igniting the fire at their house in Sarnada village under Dangiyawas police station limits. While the child died on the spot, Sanju succumbed to her burn injuries during treatment on Saturday morning.
According to the police, none of the in-laws or the husband were present at the time of the incident. Neighbours rushed to the house after noticing smoke, but the mother and daughter could not be saved.
Following Sanju’s death, a dispute arose between her parental family and her in-laws over the body. Eventually, after the post-mortem, the remains were handed over to her parents, who cremated the mother and daughter together.
Her father, Omaram Bishnoi, lodged an FIR against Sanju’s husband, Dilip Bishnoi, and his parents, accusing them of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. He alleged that his daughter was subjected to continuous torture that drove her to take the extreme step.
The police have seized Sanju’s mobile phone and recovered an alleged suicide note during the investigation. In the note, she accused her husband, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-law, and a man named Ganpat Singh of harassment. Investigators are now trying to identify Ganpat Singh, who, according to sources, allegedly harassed her in collusion with her husband.
An FSL team has also collected evidence from the site, and further investigations are underway.
