Respite from heat: Rain lashes parts of Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Chandigarh

Chandigarh, April 20: Heavy rain lashed the parts of Delhi-NCR, Punjab and Chandigarh on Thursday, bringing people respite from soaring temperatures.

Apart from this, Ghaziabad witnessed dark clouds. 


At the same time, the Indian Meteorological Department forecasted a maximum temperature of 38 degrees Celsius in Delhi. Temperatures had already plummeted earlier in the day on Wednesday. The day temperature on Wednesday was substantially lower than it had been in prior days. The maximum temperature was above 40 degrees on three days.

On the other hand, heatwave alerts are being issued across India. As per Cambridge University study, more than 90 per cent of India is the danger zone of heatwave impacts. And national capital Delhi is especially vulnerable to the effects of heatwave. 

The study by Cambridge University adds that heatwaves in India are becoming more severe and frequent amid climate change. 

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heat wave warnings for several regions, including Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha. On Sunday, 13 people died from heat stroke, and many more needed medical help after attending a government-sponsored event in Navi Mumbai. They were exposed to the scorching sun for hours.
