Manipur Ethnic Violence: Supreme Court calls for constructive solutions and sets boundaries in crisis

New Delhi, July 10: While hearing multiple pleas on the Manipur situation, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud emphasised that the Supreme Court cannot be responsible for law and order and that it is the duty of the elected government to address such matters.

Responding to Senior Advocate Colin Gonsalves, who represents the Kuki community and seeks the court's intervention to restore order in the northeastern state, the Chief Justice expressed concern about the potential escalation of violence.

Since clashes erupted between the Kukis and Meitis in May, nearly 150 people have lost their lives, and many more have been injured in ethnic violence in Manipur. Gonsalves alleged that the state-sponsored violence is being fueled by the BJP-led government, accusing them of supporting armed groups involved in the unrest.

The Chief Justice, however, emphasized that the court's role is not to handle law and order but to focus on its legal remit. He encouraged the petitioners to return with constructive suggestions to address the humanitarian crisis. The court acknowledged the status report filed by the Chief Secretary regarding the current situation in Manipur.

Additionally, the court has urged both the central and state governments to consider the request of the Manipur High Court Bar Association to ensure the clearance of a critical 10-kilometer stretch of highway for essential supplies. The court will resume the hearing on this matter tomorrow.
