Toll rates slashed by up to 50% on national highways with flyovers, tunnels and elevated roads
PTC Web Desk: In a significant relief for motorists, the Central Government has announced a major revision in toll charges on national highways, slashing rates by up to 50% for road stretches comprising flyovers, tunnels, bridges, or elevated corridors. This decision follows an amendment to the National Highways Fee Rules, 2008, notified by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on July 2, 2025. Under the revised rules, a new formula has been introduced to calculate toll charges on such stretches.
As per the updated guidelines, toll on a NH section that comprises structures like tunnels or flyovers will now be calculated using the lower value derived from either of the two methods: Ten times the length of the structure(s) added to the remaining length of the highway, or five times the total length of the entire highway section.
Whichever value is smaller will be considered for computing the toll. For example, if a 40 km section is entirely made up of structures, the calculation would be: 10 x 40 km = 400 km; 5 x 40 km = 200 km
In such a scenario, toll will be charged for 200 km, resulting in a 50% reduction in the payable amount.
Earlier, toll for these structures was calculated at 10 times the standard rate per km, to compensate for the higher construction costs. A senior official from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) confirmed that the revised method will substantially bring down toll charges on highways featuring infrastructure such as underpasses, flyovers, tunnels, and elevated roads.
