Two JeM commanders killed in Udhampur encounter; weapons recovered after joint operation

PTC Web Desk: Two militants affiliated with the Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) were killed in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district, police officials confirmed on Wednesday.

The operation was carried out jointly by the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Indian Army and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) following specific intelligence inputs about terrorist movement in the area.

According to security sources, the slain militants have been identified as JeM commanders Mavi and Zubair. An AK-47 rifle and an M4 carbine were recovered after their bodies were retrieved from the encounter site.

The terrorists were first detected hiding inside a natural cave in the Jophar–Jaffer forest belt of Ramnagar late Tuesday afternoon. A fierce exchange of fire broke out around 4 pm after the security forces established contact. The gunfight continued for over an hour before subsiding temporarily.

Officials said the militants made another attempt to break the cordon under the cover of darkness at around 7.30 pm, prompting fresh firing. In response, additional Army units, including paratroopers and dog squads, were deployed to tighten the security ring around the forested area.

No firing was reported overnight as forces maintained their positions and prepared for a decisive action. The final assault was launched early Wednesday, leading to the killing of both terrorists.

Security officials said the operation, codenamed Operation Kiya, demonstrated effective coordination among multiple agencies.

“Contact was established and sustained, preventing the terrorists from escaping. A measured and coordinated strategy led to their neutralisation,” an official involved in the operation said, highlighting the professionalism and tactical precision displayed during the encounter.

Search operations in the area were continuing to rule out the presence of any additional militants, officials added.
