Two killed, several critical after ammonia gas leak at Tamil Nadu seafood export unit, CM Vijay orders probe
PTC News Desk: At least two migrant workers lost their lives and 64 others were affected after an ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing and export factory in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district.
The victims, many of whom were migrant workers from northern Indian states employed at the unit, experienced breathing problems and other health complications following the leak. They were immediately taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
According to R Kumar, 60 women and four men were exposed to the ammonia gas, which was being used as a coolant in the factory's processing operations.
Describing the incident as "extremely tragic," Kumar said that Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay had expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and instructed officials to take strict action against those responsible.
Authorities have registered an FIR in connection with the incident, and two owners of the company have been taken in for questioning. Investigators are currently examining the circumstances that led to the gas leak.
The incident has raised serious concerns about industrial safety standards and the handling of hazardous chemicals in manufacturing and processing facilities.
