UIDAI challenges Moody's assertions on Aadhaar without supporting evidence
New Delhi, September 26: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has strongly refuted the recent claims made by international credit agency Moody's Investors Service regarding the Aadhaar system, asserting that these sweeping assertions lack supporting evidence.
Moody's Investors Service had made critical remarks about Aadhaar, suggesting that the system often leads to service denials and questioning the reliability of biometric technologies, especially in hot and humid climates, particularly for manual laborers.
In response, UIDAI issued a robust rebuttal, defending Aadhaar's credibility and trustworthiness. The UIDAI, the custodian of Aadhaar, pointed out that the report in question failed to provide any primary or secondary data or research to substantiate its claims.
The UIDAI statement emphasised that the report did not make any effort to seek information or facts about the issues raised directly from the Authority. It also noted that the report inaccurately cited the number of Aadhaars issued as 1.2 billion, while the UIDAI's website clearly presents the updated figures.
The UIDAI further highlighted that the report failed to acknowledge alternative biometric authentication methods available, such as face authentication and iris authentication. It also mentioned the availability of mobile OTP as an option in many use cases.
Regarding the security and privacy concerns raised in the report, the UIDAI reiterated that it has consistently maintained the highest standards in safeguarding data. The statement highlighted that no data breaches from the Aadhaar database have been reported to date, as confirmed in responses to Parliament questions.
The UIDAI's response aims to address the concerns raised by Moody's Investors Service and reaffirm the trustworthiness and security of the Aadhaar system, which has been widely adopted and used by over a billion Indians for more than a decade.
