Uttar Pradesh: The Uttar Pradesh government has recently mandated a minimum age requirement of six years for admission into Class 1 in all schools affiliated with the state board.

According to the latest directives issued by the Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday, children who turn six years old by April 1, 2024, will now be eligible for admission to Class I.

This decision aligns with the principles outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which underscores the importance of developmental readiness and standardization of educational practices across the country.

P.S. Baghel, the Director of Basic Education, has instructed all district education officers to focus on reintegrating out-of-school children and conducting enrollment campaigns until the end of April. This initiative aims to ensure that every child has access to quality education and is given the opportunity to begin their schooling journey at an appropriate age.

The recent directives emphasize that children under the age of six will be enrolled in kindergarten, aligning with the provisions of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act of 2009, which aims to ensure universal access to education.

During enrollment, students are required to provide their Aadhaar numbers. If a student does not have an Aadhaar card, the details of their parents will be used instead. Parents without Aadhaar cards are required to obtain one within two weeks of enrollment.

Additionally, the enrollment register must include the names of both parents, or the legal guardian in case of the death of both parents. These measures are aimed at streamlining the enrollment process and ensuring accurate documentation of students and their guardians.

This move is expected to have several benefits, including promoting better learning outcomes by ensuring that children are emotionally, socially, and cognitively prepared for the demands of formal education. It may also help reduce dropout rates and improve overall student retention by fostering a positive and supportive learning environment.
