PTC News Desk: A man in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, was given a life sentence after he slashed open his pregnant wife's stomach with a sickle to determine whether she would give birth to a boy or a girl.

In September 2020, Panna Lal, a resident of Civil Lines in Badaun, attacked his wife Anita.

After 22 years of marriage, the couple had five kids. On the other hand, because Panna Lal wanted her to have a son, they used to fight frequently. Anita's family was aware of the conflict between the two and attempted to talk Panna Lal out of it, but he vowed to divorce Anita and get remarried in order to have a son.

The couple argued about the unborn child's gender once more on the day of the event. Panna Lal became furious and threatened to cut Anita's stomach open to see if she was carrying a boy or a girl. He vowed to kill Anita when she retaliated.

She attempted to flee from him after he struck her with a sickle. Grabbing her, he hacked open her tummy with the sickle. Her pregnancy lasted eight months. Anita said in court that her intestines were left dangling from her stomach due to the depth of the cut.

Her brother, who worked at a nearby shop, heard her screams as she rushed out into the street and came to save her. Panna Lal ran from the spot upon seeing him.

They hurried Anita to the hospital. Although she managed to survive the attack, her son was not salvageable. Panna Lal contended in court that Anita had intentionally caused her own injuries in order to fabricate a case against him because he and her brothers were at odds over property.
