Western disturbance to bring rain, thunderstorms and sudden temperature drop across North India
PTC Web Desk: A sudden change in weather is set to affect large parts of North India over the next two days, as an active western disturbance moves across the region. The system is likely to trigger widespread rain, thunderstorms, snowfall in hilly areas and a noticeable fall in temperatures.
Weather forecasts indicate that areas, including Delhi NCR, Chandigarh, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, are expected to experience light to heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms on March 20. These weather conditions may disrupt normal routines, especially in urban centres and agricultural regions.
Daytime temperatures are likely to fall significantly, with maximum temperatures expected to hover between 18°C and 24°C. Such readings are unusual for this time of the year and are more commonly seen during peak winter months like January.
The sudden chill has led to what many are calling a brief return of “winter-like” conditions in late March.
Meteorologists have highlighted that the current western disturbance is not typical. It features an extended trough stretching across a vast geographical area, which enhances cloud formation and increases the likelihood of intense weather activity.
This unusual structure is expected to fuel stronger thunderstorms, gusty winds and lightning in several parts of the plains.
In the higher altitudes of North India, the system is likely to bring fresh snowfall, adding to the overall intensity of the weather pattern across the region.
Weather experts have urged people to remain cautious, especially during thunderstorms and lightning activity. Sudden wind gusts and reduced visibility could pose risks.
Residents are advised to keep track of official updates from the India Meteorological Department for real-time alerts and safety guidelines.
