Akhilesh Yadav indicates conclusion of seat-sharing agreement with Congress

PTC News Desk: In response to queries regarding his absence from Congress' 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra' in Amethi and Rae Bareli, Akhilesh Yadav has firmly reiterated that there is no discord with Rahul Gandhi or the Congress party, emphasising that the alliance between Samajwadi Party and Congress in Uttar Pradesh remains intact.

Dismissing any speculation of strained relations, Akhilesh Yadav stated on Wednesday, "All is well that ends well...there is no dispute...there will be an alliance." This statement from Yadav comes amidst concerns raised due to his non-participation in Rahul Gandhi's recent yatra.

Earlier in the week, Akhilesh Yadav had clarified that his participation in Rahul Gandhi's yatra would only occur once the seat-sharing arrangements between the two parties were finalised. Reports suggest that the respective state units of both parties are expected to convene a joint press conference imminently to formally announce the details of their alliance.

Sources close to the negotiations reveal that the Samajwadi Party has consented to allocate 17–19 seats to the Congress in Uttar Pradesh as part of their agreement on seat distribution. With Uttar Pradesh boasting 80 Lok Sabha constituencies, this agreement holds significant electoral weight.

In light of the latest understanding, the Congress has been assigned the Sitapur seat, substituting Hathras from its initial preferences. Initially, the Congress had expressed interest in contesting from 28 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. This development unfolds against the backdrop of a surprising move by the Samajwadi Party, which unilaterally declared candidates for 27 seats. On Monday, the party announced 11 candidates, including individuals like Mukhtar Ansari's brother and BSP MP Afzal Ansari.

The sequence of events began with the Samajwadi Party unveiling its first list of candidates for 16 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh on January 30, marking the commencement of a dynamic and evolving political landscape as the election season approaches.
