Historic step for opposition unity: Rahul Gandhi after meeting Nitish Kumar, Tejashwi Yadav

New Delhi, April 12: Rahul Gandhi said on Wednesday that the meeting with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav as part of efforts to create a common front against the BJP was a "historic step" towards opposition unity and an ideological fight.

Rahul Gandhi, who posted a photo of Kharge and him with JD-U and RJD leaders, stated that they are "standing together, will fight together - for India." "In this battle of ideology, a historic step has been taken today towards opposition unity. (We are) standing together, will fight together - for India!" Rahul Gandhi said.

Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh, president of Janata Dal-United, was also present at the meeting at Kharge's residence.

The meeting is being seen as an attempt by Congress and other opposition parties to continue their "unity" displayed during the budget session of Parliament, which ended on April 6. The opposition's demand for a JPC investigation into the Hindenburg-Adani controversy repeatedly disrupted the session. The opposition parties further criticized the government over the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from the Lok Sabha following his conviction in a criminal defamation case by a Surat court.

Kharge had earlier this month called Nitish Kumar, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in an effort to build on the "unity" displayed during the budget session of Parliament.

Opposition leaders had previously tried to form a broad unity to take on the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

In Bihar, the Congress is a junior ally in the ruling Mahagathbandhan, which also comprises the JD-U and Rashtriya Janata Dal. Nitish Kumar is the state's Chief Minister, and Tejashwi Yadav is the Deputy Chief Minister.
