'State leadership has damaged organisation from within': Navjot Kaur Sidhu quits Congress, calls Raja Warring 'ineffective and corrupt'
PTC Web Desk: Nearly two months after being suspended from the Congress over her controversial remarks on the cost of becoming Punjab Chief Minister, former MLA Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu late Saturday evening announced her resignation from the party, accusing its state leadership of sidelining capable leaders and damaging the organisation from within.
In a strongly worded post on social media platform X, Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu targeted Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, calling him “ineffective and corrupt.” She alleged that Warring had compromised the party’s interests for personal benefit through an alleged understanding with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
“You have sacrificed the Congress for petty gains in silent coordination with AAP,” she claimed, further alleging that the PPCC chief avoided legal trouble by aligning himself with the state’s political establishment.
Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s resignation comes a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Jalandhar. In an unexpected move, she praised the Prime Minister’s leadership and criticised opposition parties for attempting to disrupt his visit.
She said political rivals should respect the Prime Minister’s constitutional position and appreciate initiatives being announced for Punjab, instead of coming together to oppose him.
Earlier Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu was suspended from the party’s primary membership in December last year after she made a sensational claim that a “briefcase carrying Rs 500 crore” was required to become Punjab’s Chief Minister, a statement she said her husband, former PPCC chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, could not agree to.
She had also alleged that multiple Congress leaders aspiring for the CM’s post were weakening the party from within.
Although the suspension letter did not officially spell out the reasons, party sources had said the leadership viewed her comments seriously, especially during the zila parishad and panchayat samiti elections, when unity was crucial.
In her resignation message, she questioned why no action was taken against several senior Congress leaders whom she accused of working against Navjot Singh Sidhu. She alleged that individuals who opposed her husband were later rewarded with influential positions.
She also claimed that efforts were made to weaken her politically by fielding candidates aimed at defeating her in her constituency. “I have enough evidence, but I am no longer interested in fighting for a party where honest and promising voices are ignored,” she said, adding that internal dissent was selectively punished while senior leaders were spared.
Meanwhile, former Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, who has stayed away from active politics in recent months, has not commented on his wife’s resignation so far.
