President’s Rule lifted in Manipur ahead of formation of new NDA govt
PTC Web Desk: President’s Rule in Manipur was formally withdrawn on Wednesday, clearing the way for the formation of a new government in the northeastern state. The decision came just hours before the swearing-in of the new administration, with NDA legislature party leader Y Khemchand Singh set to assume office as the Chief Minister.
The state had been under President’s Rule since February 13, 2025. Following the proclamation, the 60-member Manipur Legislative Assembly, whose term runs until 2027, had remained in suspended animation.
A notification issued by President Droupadi Murmu confirmed the revocation. “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 356 of the Constitution, I hereby revoke the Proclamation issued on February 13, 2025, in relation to the State of Manipur, with effect from February 4, 2026,” the order stated.
President’s Rule was imposed after the resignation of the BJP-led government under Chief Minister N Biren Singh on February 9 last year. His resignation followed months of intense ethnic unrest in the state.
Manipur had witnessed prolonged violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which erupted in May 2023. The unrest began after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was held in the hill districts to oppose the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
The ethnic clashes claimed at least 260 lives and forced thousands of residents to flee their homes, triggering one of the worst internal crises the state has faced in recent decades.
