ECI dismisses Rahul Gandhi’s ‘vote theft’ allegations as baseless and irresponsible

PTC Web Desk: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has strongly refuted allegations made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who accused the constitutional body of being complicit in electoral fraud to benefit the ruling BJP. Calling the claims "baseless", the ECI urged its officials to remain focused on their duties despite what it described as repeated and unwarranted attacks.

While addressing the media on Friday regarding Bihar's Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, Rahul Gandhi alleged that the ECI had facilitated "vote theft", adding  that the Congress possessed conclusive evidence to back its claims. "Votes are being stolen, and we have undeniable proof that the Election Commission is actively participating in this theft to support the BJP," Rahul Gandhi said.

The Leader of the Opposition further claimed that the Congress had carried out an independent six-month investigation due to the Election Commission’s alleged non-cooperation. “We delved into every detail and what we found is no less than an atom bomb. When this bomb explodes, the Election Commission won’t be able to face the country,” he warned.

Taking an aggressive tone, Rahul Gandhi added that individuals within the ECI, including those who are retired, would be held accountable. “This is an act against the nation—tantamount to treason. No matter where you are, we will not spare those involved,” he added.

In response, the Election Commission issued an official statement dismissing the charges. The panel called the remarks "irresponsible" and reaffirmed its commitment to conducting elections in a free, fair, and transparent manner. “Despite daily threats and baseless accusations, we urge all election officers to maintain their integrity and continue their work without fear,” the statement read.

The ECI did not directly name Rahul Gandhi but made it clear that attempts to undermine public trust in the democratic process would not deter the commission’s responsibilities.
