Gujarati New Year is popularly known as Bestu Varas. It marks the beginning of the Kartik month of Hindu calendar. On this day, people worship Govardhan Hill. According to the legends, Lord Krishna worshiped the Govardhan Hill to protect the people of Mathura from the heavy rain. Gujarati people decorate their homes with lights and flowers on this day. They visit temples and pray for a good start to the year on this day.
