Amritsar double murder shocks Punjab: Father kills daughter and her lover over honour
PTC Web Desk: In a chilling case of honour killing, a man in Punjab’s Amritsar district allegedly murdered his daughter and her lover using a sharp-edged weapon. The accused, Gurdayal Singh, later surrendered to the police with blood-stained hands.
The deceased have been identified as Jobandeep Singh (24), a resident of Kakhar village, and Sukhpreet Kaur, the daughter of the accused, from Boparai village in Amritsar. According to initial investigations, the accused allegedly first electrocuted the couple, before repeatedly attacking them with a sharp weapon.
It is learnt that Sukhpreet and Jobandeep were in a relationship for some time. Their families lived in close proximity, and Jobandeep worked as a labourer. On Sunday, the couple eloped from their homes and went missing, following which Gurdayal Singh and his family started to search for them.
On Monday, the couple reportedly visited the court to get married legally. However, they were spotted by a relative amidst the crowd, who informed Sukhpreet’s family. Her relatives then allegedly convinced the couple to return home, assuring them of acceptance and support for their marriage.
Once the couple reached home, Gurdayal Singh turned violent. As per sources, he caught both of them, inflicted electric shocks, and then hacked them to death with a sharp weapon. Following the double murder, the accused walked into Ram Tirath police station and confessed to the killings.
SHO Inderjit Singh confirmed the double murder and said the accused had been taken into custody. "We have registered a case and taken the bodies into custody for post-mortem," he said.
