He was appointed from 2009-batch IPS officer of Punjab cadre and then took over as Chandigarh SSP and was on deputation on September 29, 2020 and was on three year tenure. Kuldeep Singh was sent back to his parent cadre in last year December 12, just 10 months before the completion of his tenure. This was done on the directions of Governor Banwari Lal Prohit.

Meanwhile, in a letter to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on last December 14, Governor Purohit said that, “When serious inputs started coming about the misconduct of UT SSP Chahal, I ascertained their authenticity from reliable sources, after which, I communicated telephonically with the chief secretary, Punjab, on November 28, 2022, my decision to remove UT SSP Chahal from the critical post. At the same time, I advised him to send a panel of efficient IPS officers for the post of SSP, UT.” Regarding this scenario, the state government has not initiated any inquiry yet.

Recently, amidst the controversy over Kuldeep Chahal being sent back turns murkier with the involvement of CM and Governor in a “war of letters,” sources in the Punjab government said.

“He had asked for a panel verbally. It was not sought in writing. The Governor was told that Chahal was due for his promotion in the state and he would soon be called back. We thought the matter ended there. But after a few days, he was repatriated prematurely,” said a source.

He later added by saying that the Chief Minister was aware about it that the UT administration was alleging that Chahal was facing allegations of helping a certain party in a dispute.
