Punjab: Cordon-and-search operation across state; hotspots identified in each district

Mohali, November 15:  The Punjab Police on Tuesday carried out a special cordon-and-search operation to check the movement of anti-social elements and drug smugglers across the state. The operation was led by Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav in Ludhiana.

Senior police officers, including ADG, IG and DIG, were engaged in the cordon-and-search operation.

The DGP said it was a special campaign being run against anti-social elements and drug smugglers. He said hotspots had been identified in each district.

DGP Gaurav Yadav said the operation aimed at making police presence visible and instil sense of security among the people of Punjab.

He said a drive to verify arms licences would be started in association with deputy commissioners.

DGP Yadav said the Punjab Government had banned display of weapons in public, including on social media, and action would be taken if anyone violated the order. He said action would also be taken against anyone making hate speech.

Notably, the AAP-led Punjab Government has banned public display of firearms and songs promoting gun culture and violence. It also ordered a review of arms licences within the next three months.

Amid the ongoing crackdown on drug dealers and peddlers in Punjab, Director General of Punjab Police Gaurav Yadav on Tuesday said "licensed arms have been found to be used in about 60 per cent of the state's crimes."

The remark came on a day the Punjab Police said it had recovered 12 gm of heroin during search operations at the Ghoda colony in Ludhiana district.

The DGP further said the search and serizure operations against drugs would be intensified in the coming days.

He has also directed the top police bosses to effectively attach the properties of the arrested drug smugglers in a bid to recover their ill-gotten money.
